Faecal Microbiota Transplantation
Faecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) is an exciting and emerging treatment that involves transferring the gut microbiome from a healthy donor through their stool into the gastrointestinal tract of a patient. This process helps restore the balance of gut bacteria, which can be disrupted in conditions like ulcerative colitis and recurrent Clostridium difficile infection.
My PhD was entirely focused on FMT. I led the development of the Australian guidelines, assisted the TGA in defining the legislation on its use, and currently lead a team of researchers continuing to explore its untapped potential. While FMT is a well-researched intervention, its role within traditional medicine is still evolving. I strongly advocate for using it as a complementary treatment alongside other therapies, and I would be happy to work collaboratively with your existing healthcare providers.
I am able to offer FMT when it is appropriate, but it is crucial that this decision is made after a thorough discussion about the risks, benefits (both short and long term), alternatives, and potential costs. During our consultation, we can explore whether FMT is the right option for you, taking into consideration your specific medical condition and treatment history.
I source FMT material from BiomeBank, Australia's first TGA-approved stool bank, ensuring the highest standards of safety and quality. Please note that while FMT is a promising treatment, it is generally not covered by Medicare or health funds, and out-of-pocket costs will apply.
